15 Familiar world
changing words
“He who is without sin among you,
let him throw a stone at her first.”
If you are new to this blog, please read the PREFACE to better understand the
intents of these writings: https://ajl-heart.blogspot.com/2019/11/intro-to-what-makes-jesus-tick.html
The goal is
to understand with eyes of the heart, WHAT MAKES JESUS TICK
In Chapter 7, and
other places, we see the wonderful, tough loving ways Jesus consistently blew
his adversaries minds and boldly ruffled their feathers. The Lord delights in stretching
people beyond the intellectually comprehensible. I recently heard a great
quote from Tony Evans, “faith doesn’t always make sense, it makes miracles.”
John Chapter 8 begins
with yet another test from the scribes and Pharisees in the Temple. See how
they set the stage for confrontation in order to draw them beyond the
intellectually comprehensible.
John 8:2 but early the next morning he was back again
at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them.
3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious
law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of
adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.
Notice how Jesus demonstrates
the wisdom of the love of God shining through HIS lack of response.
John 8:4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was
caught in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such
should be stoned. But what do You say?”
6 This they said, testing Him, that they might
have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the
ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.
Jesus seemingly
ignores their provocation to get Him to do or say something contrary to the
character of the Father. Verse 6 is such a polite way to address these poor,
misled, Jewish leaders that had no idea of the devil’s intent. Do you like
being ignored when you come up with some clever scheme? As parents, we learn
when to lovingly ignore our children’s fussing. As they continued fusing, Jesus
spoke just 15 words to them that changed lives and pointed to His whole reason
for coming to earth, revealing WHAT
MAKES HIM TICK.
John 8:7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised
Himself up and said to them, “He
who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
8 And
again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
This was one of those
rare times when all those who heard what Jesus said understood it and responded
correctly. Their hearts were cut to the core, there was no response to save
face. Could you imagine how different our world would be today if these everyone
heeded these words?
John 8: 9
Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience,
went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was
left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
This verse also shows
the most wonderful impact of the Word of God, “being
convicted by their conscience.” When the light shines the darkness
flees. The Truth, in this encounter etched their hard hearts. This shows the
love of Jesus so wonderfully; they couldn’t get defensive for there
is no defense against the anointed Word of Truth.
Jesus did not respond to their question that was intended to trip Him up.
Instead HE set them up to experience heartfelt conviction. Verse 9 is the jury
delivering the verdict, both accuser and accused are guilty. OH, the Wisdom and
the love of our Savior!
John 8:10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the
woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”
11 She
said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”
These next verses
clearly defines the “End Game,” the greatest goal of the Gospel:
Luke 19:10
For the Son of Man came to seek and
save those who are lost.”
John 3: 16
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not
perish but have eternal life.
Rom.8:1 So now there is no condemnation for those who
belong to Christ Jesus.
2 And because you belong to him, the power of
the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
This encounter causes
us all to do some soul searching prayer:
